Job Description

The Safety Specialist assists in the oversight of a small or mid-sized division’s safety, health, and environmental programs. The Specialist will work closely with their offsite Safety, Health & Environment (SH&E) Manager to develop location programs, policies, and training materials. The role requires the specialist to train employees at orientation, on the job, and at monthly divisional meetings. The specialist ensures that the facility maintains compliance with current regulations and works with their offsite SH&E Manager to implement solutions to issues that are identified. The Safety Specialist collaborates with managers and safety leaders at other divisions, as appropriate, to improve safety performance and culture at the division.  

Essential Functions
  • Build rapport with the local leadership team and hourly employees. 
  • Ensure daily safety presence on the shop (factory) floor. 
  • Conduct safety orientation training (general awareness training) for all new employees. 
  • Conduct safety training for current employees. 
  • Assist in the development and implementation of divisional training materials.
  • Maintain training completion documentation per regulations and company guidelines. 
  • Conduct regular divisional safety meetings (i.e. safety committee, per location schedule). 
  • Regularly maintain and update safety employee communication programs (i.e. bulletin boards, whiteboards, suggestion programs, safety committee minutes, etc.). 
  • Serve as a resource for employees to voice safety concerns.  Address employee concerns in a timely manner. 
  • Facilitate reporting of ALL occupational injuries and illnesses; near-miss events; property damage and security concerns in a timely manner and in accordance with company procedures. 
  • Initiate, review and close company incident reports. 
  • Update and maintain all OSHA recordkeeping forms (300, 300A, 301) as required. 
  • Perform all duties associated with Workers’ Compensation related activities. 
  • Interacting with local medical providers. 
  • Liaison with third-party administer (TPA) for worker’s compensation claims. 
  • Communicate with other stakeholders as required. 
  • Assist the division with maintenance and creation of safety compliance programs per regulations and collaborate with senior SH&E staff.
  • Participate in Housekeeping/5S (Sort, Set-In-Order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain) inspection program. 
  • Collaborate on Job Safety Analysis (JSA), risk assessments, and PPE assessments. 
  • Maintain MSDSs/SDSs for division/location. 
  • Ensure shift/daily, monthly and annual inspections for cranes, lifting/rigging equipment, and forklifts are completed as required.  Ensure items needing correction are completed in a timely manner. 
  • Responsible for maintaining adequate PPE supplies and safety equipment for the location. 
  • Conduct internal inspections/audits to improve safety performance. 
  • Provide support, track and monitor safety corrective actions and proactively drive closure. 
  • Reports monthly safety performance (KPI/KAI) to division leadership and SH&E leaders. 
  • Participate in a minimum of one (1) off-site safety internal audit per year.
  • Assists with communication with 3rd Party (external) audits/inspections.  This typically would include local fire departments, property loss prevention audits, local, state or federal regulatory agencies. 
  • Network with other safety professionals and/or companies regarding divisional safety programs. 
  • Other duties as specified. 

Minimum Qualifications
REQUIRED
  • Associates or Bachelor’s degree in safety-related field or 2 years of related work experience.
  • Demonstrated ability in collecting and analyzing data; preparing reports; and training employees. 
  • Outstanding problem-solving skills. 
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills (both written and verbal). 
  • Proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). 
  • Must be able to flex hours to temporarily work any shift. 
  • Customer-focused and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse work community. 

PREFERRED
  • Certified Occupational Hygiene Safety Technician (OHST), Certified Safety Trained Supervisor (STS) or Certified Occupational Safety Specialist (COSS)
  • General knowledge of typical plant machinery and material handling equipment. 
  • Metal Service Center, Steel Industry, or Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Product Knowledge.
