What You'll Do

The Y-12 National Security Complex is recruiting for summer 2022 internship opportunities in Business Analytics, Safety, or Industrial Hygiene. The Internship Program is a 10-12 week program that offers challenging assignments, projects, and career development workshops to enhance your professional growth.

Examine where Business Analytics may serve as a continuous improvement process in Safety & Industrial Hygiene.

Activities may include:

  • Review 2 recent injury trending reports and use the reports as a launch off point for this internship. Irons/Filler (1/2008 - 5/2015 data) and Novac (CY2013 - 2016 data)
  • Evaluate injury and illness data from calendar years 2015 - 2020 (approximately 250 injuries per year)
  • Trend data using statistical tools to provide a novel perspective
  • Conduct a deep dive in FY20 lost time incidents (recent increase in injuries)
  • Evaluate pro's and con's for preparing control charts for each injury type (first aid, recordable-injury only, DART, Lost-time). Prepare control charts for each injury type
  • Evaluate effectiveness of recommendation(s) implemented in the Novac report (timing of safety pauses)
  • Intern will be mentored by a Y-12 Safety and Industrial Hygiene senior staff member
  • Evaluate and recommend other ES&H areas/programs use of Business Analytics

Deliverables may include:

  • Document the activities conducted, findings, and recommendations in a report
  • Prepare a 1-hour presentation and deliver it to VP-Mission Assurance and other managers

Minimum Job Requirements
  • To be considered for the Intern position, applicants must be working toward or have completed a master program in Business Analytics, Safety, or Industrial Hygiene degree, students who have graduated are eligible up to one year post graduation.
  • In addition, you must have an overall GPA (grade point average) of 2.8/4.0 or above, and be a United States Citizen.
  • A completed online application is required, you must include a resume and current transcript and ensure that your graduation date and GPA are listed on your resume. Failure to attach a resume and transcript will eliminate you from the selection process.
Preferred Job Requirements
  • Background in electronics is preferred for those candidates interested in Radiation Protection Instrumentation.

Requires a Q clearance; however all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required.

Position may require entry into Materials Access Areas (MAA) and participation in the Human Reliability Program (HRP). If HRP is required, candidate must complete a counterintelligence-scope polygraph, pursuant to 10CFR 709. Medical requirements may apply.
