At Vitro, the Instrumentation Engineer will design and develop new devices and enhance or redesign existing devices used to measure and characterize the optical, electrical, or electronic performance properties of new products. This position resides in a research facility / office setting, with required travel to other manufacturing and production sites for technlogy transfer.

Responsibilities

Supervisory and Project Responsibilities:

    Acts as project engineer for design, prototype fabrication, and manufacturing development.
  • May oversee technicians during the prototype fabrication and testing phases.
  • Has oversight of the daily workflow of both internal and external resources.
  • Provides updates and evaluations of project progress, issues, and needs to ensure timely execution and delivery of projects.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Analyzes and evaluates current equipment and measurement protocols for new products; identifies gaps and areas for improvement; designs and develops instrumentation to meet those needs.
  • Collaborates with other engineers to develop accurate, efficient instrumentation, and data interfaces in accordance with safety and usability standards, customer expectations, and controls methodologies.
  • Designs and tests prototypes of equipment. Develop statistically robust measurement process. Leverage external resources and designs as appropriate.
  • Creates basic schematics and simulated models to test designs; modifies designs to meet specifications and budget requirements.
  • Working with internal and external resources, oversees the implementation of new measuring devices and control systems, ensuring devices are correctly installed and properly tested at the production location.
  • Demonstrate statistically robust measurement process.
  • Drafts and presents formal technical documents, reports, and testing results to manager for approval.
  • Drafts technical manuals for instrumentation.
  • Provides training related to devices to employees and/or customers.
  • Work collaboratively with controls, production, and quality engineers to implement process control protocols and tools.
  • Willingness to travel to other Vitro industrial facilities at least 25% of the year.
  • Must be able to lift 15 pounds at times.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in physics, electrical, mechanical, computer, or other applicable engineering field required; Master's degree preferred.
  • At least two years of practical experience in industrial research and technology transfer to manufacturing environments highly desired.
  • Experience with industrial processes and equipment, such as pumps, motors, and valves, is a plus
    Aptitude to acquire and implement knowledge of codes, standards, and regulations related to instrumentation and control systems, such as ISA, IEC, and NEC is required
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience with various test methods, and the design, development, and implementation of a wide variety of instruments.
  • Thorough understanding of applied math and physics of electrical, electronic, and optical properties of materials and thin film structures.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient with computer-aided design (CAD) software, and computer programming (e.g., C, C++, Python) languages. Experience with data interfaces between data acquisition equipment systems.
