Job Description

We are seeking a candidate to join the Pitter Lab as a Research Technician 3 at the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center in Columbus Ohio. The Pitter lab is interested in understanding the role of tumor heterogeneity in cancer biology and therapeutic resistance, with a special interest in radiation resistance and pancreatic cancer. We approach this question using a combination of sophisticated genetically engineered mouse models, single cell transcriptomics, tracing and ablation of distinct tumor cell lineages, CRISPR-mediated gene regulation, and advanced imaging techniques.

As a Research Senior Technician in the laboratory, you will have an exciting opportunity to help establish a dynamic team environment focused on developing new, innovative therapeutic concepts aimed at reducing cellular heterogeneity tumors. In this role you will be responsible for performing contemporary biomedical laboratory research under the supervision of the principal investigator and other senior lab personnel while supporting the research infrastructure in the laboratory. You will be assigned duties with an increasing level of responsibility and independence as you develop, based on your performance.

Specific lab duties expected include but are not limited to:

  • Supporting mouse colony maintenance, including weaning, genotyping, drug administration and mouse dissections for sample collection.

  • Assisting in sample processing, cryosectioning, histological staining and imaging.

  • Performing independent tissue culture-based experiments, RNA/DNA/protein extractions, cell-based assays and other biomedical methods specific to our ongoing work.

  • Assisting in lab upkeep including maintenance of instruments, ordering and maintaining inventory of reagents, preparation of solutions and lab stocks.

  • Maintaining accurate and detailed electronic and paper records of data.

  • Responding to and complete tasks as instructed by the P.I. and staff associated with designated research projects by carrying out the requested activities.

  • Aiding with other ongoing research for peers and research personnel in the laboratory by completing tasks related to the projects within the deadline specified.

  • Assisting in implementing new procedures and protocols to support experiments. Participate actively in developing, recommending and implementing new approved procedures, or modifications to existing protocols and procedures.

  • Maintaining and update laboratory skills as appropriate.

  • Assisting in the preparation of research papers and manuscripts for publication and presentation at conferences and workshops, and in the writing of project reports, articles and other documents.

  • Assisting principal investigator in the preparation of proposals to obtain new or renewal of extramural funding in support of research

  • Oversees and coordinates periodic maintenance and testing of laboratory equipment; performs additional duties as assigned.


Ideal candidates will be self-motivated, enthusiastic about the research topic, and able to work both independently and as part of a team. Good communication skills are essential. Comfort and willing to work with tumor-bearing mice is essential. Experience in mouse work in preferred but not required. Significant prior laboratory-based research experience is preferred but not required.

Education/Experience:

  • A Bachelors degree in a biological/health science or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required, master's degree preferred

  • 1 year of experience preferred.

  • Ability to translate, adapt and apply academic or practical knowledge in the conduct of biological/health science research is required.

  • Requires successful completion of a background check.

  • Qualified candidates may be requested to complete a pre-employment physical including a drug screen.
