What Is the Role of a Roadmaster?

A roadmaster is a managerial position, working on a railroad. In this job, you are assigned a specific territory, and are responsible for the maintenance and repairs of all tracks within your roadway. Your duties include performing inspections and managing the quality of the railroad tracks in your territory. A roadmaster must keep up to date with all regulations for railroad maintenance as well as the standards set by the individual railroad companies. You are also responsible for managing the trains that enter your territory. As such, you have tremendous responsibilities for managing the safety and efficiency of the railroad system.

What Are the Qualifications to Work as a Roadmaster?

The vast majority of training to become a roadmaster is done on the job. In terms of academic qualifications, most entry-level positions with the railroad require a high school diploma or GED. However, you need to spend a significant time working for the railroad before you can become a roadmaster. You need extensive knowledge of railroad operations, CFRC Engineering Instructions, and federal safety standards for the railroad. A roadmaster needs to possess strong management skills and the ability to oversee a large number of operations simultaneously. When working as a roadmaster, you are always on call, so you must also be responsible and reliable.

Responsible for providing technical, logistical and administrative support to the Chief Engineer for the efficient and cost-effective management of track construction and maintenance projects. Functions of the position include:

* Initiate projects following department guidelines, track maintenance and construction programs.

* Develop all work activities and manage funding, spend plans and project schedules.

* Coordinate track maintenance and construction projects with other departments.

* Manage Section work force and procurement of materials to align with project schedules and budget

* Ensure that regular track inspections are performed and provide subsequent maintenance reports to Alstom Management and FRA.

* Ensure all FRA standards are met.

* Provide input to Safety ~ Emergency Response ~ Hurricane and all other Plans and implement a Safety Plan for the prevention of personal injuries and hazardous conditions.

* Maintain a safe and dependable environment for all operations, Maintain Vehicles.
