Position Summary:
Under the general guidance of the Chief Financial Officer, the Controller oversees the Accounting function of the credit union. The Controller prepares reports and financial statements that are in conformity with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and regulatory requirements. Reviews and ensures the integrity of the general and subsidiary ledgers. Identifies and implements new accounting standards and changes to existing standards. Ensures the timely and accurate production of financial reports for executive management and the Board of Directors. Supports executive management with accounting data and analysis. Leads and participates in teams to achieve short-term and long term organizational goals and strategic initiatives

What you will do:
  • Manage the Accounting Department, including Accounting Manager and Accounts Payable Supervisor and up to 11 indirect reports. Leads, manages, motivates, coaches, trains, and mentors accounting staff; manages staff workload to ensure the accuracy, timeliness, and integrity of financial transactions and data. Supervises Accounting Manager and Accounts Payable Supervisor and up to 11 indirect reports.
  • Oversees day-to-day operations of the Accounting functions of the credit union to include: establishing and maintaining internal controls over financial transactions; producing monthly Financial Statements, Board Reports and Management Reports; application of GAAP; loan accounting; annual tax returns; annual audits/exams; accounts payable; investment accounting; fixed asset accounting; wire transfers; and cash management.
  • Prepares Financial Reports, Regulatory Reports, Board Reports.
  • Ensures that the credit union's financial statements and 5300 reports are prepared in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Coordinates and manages activities with external third party auditors, and with state and federal examiners.
  • Responds to executive management and middle management requests for accounting information or assistance.
  • Manages cash reserves at depository financial institutions.
  • Manages and ensures the integrity of financial data for a $1.5 billion credit union, including: Net Fixed Assets Accounts payable volume Total General Ledger Accounts
  • Participates in the credit union's strategic planning process by providing input into future strategic initiatives. Participates in various cross-functional and other ad hoc teams to support short-term and long-term organizational goals and to drive departmental and organizational change.
  • Develops and maintains a comprehensive set of departmental procedures, ensuring that all procedures are reviewed and updated appropriately on a periodic basis.
  • Reviews and makes recommendations for changes to accounting and financial management-related Board Policies as appropriate.
  • Provides departmental input into the credit union's annual Operating Plan.
  • Serves as on-site liaison with public accounting firm's auditors retained to conduct periodic audits of accounting and financial records, and with state and federal examiners during regulatory compliance examinations.
  • Ensures that implemented accounting policy, systems, procedures and other operating instructions are in conformity with generally accepted accounting principles, and regulations and requirements governing credit union operations.
  • Ensures the integrity of the general ledger, accounts payable, fixed asset and investment systems. Researches and makes recommendations for new systems and changes to existing systems.
  • Leads, motivates and encourages staff. Communicates and enforces extremely high standards of accuracy and internal/ external member service. Supports and acts in alignment with credit union vision, values and mission. Proactively handles employee relations and departmental issues. Develops employees, coaches and counsels staff in personnel issues, makes employment decisions and conducts performance evaluations.
  • Effective models the credit union's core values.
  • Ensures that the credit union's financial statements and 5300 reports are prepared in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Oversees the transfer of funds between financial institutions and the credit union to ensure an adequate supply of funds and cash necessary to conduct daily credit union operations and retention of required reserves.
  • Proactively reviews proposed changes to accounting rules and guidance and implements required changes to ensure continued compliance with GAAP.
  • Serves as one of the Credit Union's End User Authorization Contacts (EUAC) for all Federal Reserve Web Services and Products.

What you will need:
  • Bachelor's Degree An undergraduate degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics or a related field Required.
  • 10+ years Years of related and progressively more responsible experience in Accounting Required.
  • 4-6 years Years of related experience in the financial services industry; or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience is also required Required
  • 4-6 years Supervisory Experience Required.
  • 4-6 years Previous work in a public accounting firm is highly desired. Preferred.
  • Requires broad knowledge of accounting principles and practices and budgeting within the financial services industry. Working knowledge of financial institution operations, products and services is necessary.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Applications such as Word, Excel, Pivot Tables, Access, Outlook, PowerPoint and Teams.
  • Must be able to establish and enforce extremely high standards of quality control in department work.
  • Experience with financial systems, internet and spreadsheet software.
  • Must have strong quantitative and verbal/written communication skills. Must have the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously. Requires highly complex conceptual thinking in order to analyze and resolve problems independently. Requires ability to present complex financial concepts in an understandable manner to a wide variety of audiences.
  • Ability to multi-task and work under time constraints to meet work deadlines.
  • Must provide exceptional service to internal and external members
  • Ability to interact effectively with co-workers, understand and follow posted work rules and procedures, accept constructive criticism and lead and manage others.
  • Ability to operate standard business machines such as computer, printer, 10-key, fax, copier and telephonic devices.
  • A Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Upon Hire Required or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) Upon Hire Required.
