Basic Function
Regularly set up and prepare equipment and demonstrations for physics and astronomy classes and teaching laboratories. Design, construct, and repair apparatus for teaching and research for the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Take initiative for maintaining and improving department equipment and facilities.
Essential Job Functions
  • Set up, prepare, and maintain teaching laboratory apparatus, demonstrations, and facilities for both Physics and Astronomy.
  • Design, construct, and repair apparatus for teaching and research for the Department of Physics and Astronomy.
  • Train students in the proper use of equipment, demonstrations, machine tools, and safety; supervise students using the machine shop and assist in the proper design and construction of student research instrumentation.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, and staff on a variety of projects and tasks.
  • Organize time and provide self-direction as required to perform job priorities as assigned by the Chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school graduate or equivalent. Three years of related experience.

  • Ability to manage time and perform tasks independently, including organizing, maintaining, and setting-up laboratory equipment.

  • Ability to assist in design and construction of new demonstration and laboratory equipment. Knowledge and use of machine tools, including set-up, operation and ability to do precision machining with milling machines, lathes, band saws, drill presses, hand tools, and additional instrument shop tools.

  • Basic knowledge of electronics construction.

  • Basic knowledge of elementary laboratory equipment such as power supplies and multimeters.

  • Willingness to continually learn and to apply skills to new situations is essential.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Technical training or relevant college degree.

  • Use of computers and drafting/design software is highly desirable.
Physical Demands
Able to lift 20 lbs repeatedly, and 50 lbs frequently. Ability to stand for long periods. Able to work on step ladders to 8 ft.
