Overview

IGM Bioinformatics Analyst I

We are looking for a candidate that will assist in all aspects of next-generation sequencing analysis including data generation, analysis, interpretation, and publication. This entry-level position involves maintaining, running, and troubleshooting genomic pipelines for next-generation sequencing assays in clinical, translational and research settings. The ideal candidate will possess strong data processing and data quality control abilities, enjoy solving complex problems and have a desire to make an impact in medical care through advancing our understanding of the role of the human genome in disease. The candidate will also be encouraged to participate in bioinformatics related discussions, group meetings and presentations for the Institute for Genomic Medicine (IGM). Previous experience in bioinformatics or a computational biological background is preferred but not required for this position.

Responsibilities

    Analyze a variety of research and clinical genomic data, including: o Running internally developed and commercial pipelines o Managing data storage o Preparing reports and figures for presentations and publications o Delivering and explaining analysis results to investigators
  • Participate in the validation and deployment of in-house bioinformatics tools
  • Evaluate and integrate community-developed bioinformatics tools, as well as maintaining awareness of current literature and tools in relevant areas
  • Collaborate with laboratory personnel to ensure proper data transfer and quality control throughout the sequencing workflow
  • Perform quality control on data produced for and by the Computational Genomics Group
  • Work with biologists and bioinformatics scientists to extract biological information from next-generation sequencing data.
  • Provide efficient data management support including: o Data formatting and manipulation o Integration of data from a variety of experimental and reference resources o Ensuring compliance with data security and privacy regulations
  • Participate in software development. Training will be provided as necessary, and opportunities will increase with experience.
Qualifications

Education:

* Bachelor's degree in biology, molecular biology, genetics, computer science, bioinformatics or related field. M.S degree is a plus.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Interest in genomics and bioinformatics, and willingness to learn concepts and terminology from these fields
  • Experience in the following areas a plus: o Genomic or general bioinformatics data analysis o Knowledge of common molecular biology laboratory processes o Scripting and process automation (Python/Perl, shell), as well as experience in a Linux/Unix environment o Working with software in a cloud environment (i.e., AWS)
  • Superior attention to detail and adherence to quality standards
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities
  • Ability to effectively collaborate in a dynamic, cross-functional matrix environment

Minimum Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to remain in stationary position for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to repeatedly operate a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.
  • Must be able to occasionally move about inside the workspace to access objects necessary for the job (file cabinets, printers, etc.).
  • Must be able to accurately communicate information and ideas in person and through telecommunications.
